A Summary of the message from Flame October 16th, 2012
2 Timothy 1:6
The flame, the gift of God, is burning inside each of us. God is that Gift inside each of us.
In the Scriptures, one of the ways God has been portrayed is in the form of a flame. In the book of Exodus, God revealed Himself to Moses as the Fire in a burning bush. Another example is found in the book of Acts. Jesus had promised to send His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to be with His people after he returned to heaven to His Father. At Pentecost, It came in the form of a flame which rested on the believer’s heads as a sign that He was inside of them. God is a burning Fire inside our hearts!
The name for our Women’s ministry came from this symbolism for God and directly from the text, “Fan into Flame the gift of God, which is in you” 2Timothy 1:6. I’m going to give you a little history about how the ministry got started. A couple of years ago, I came to know that God was calling me to speak. I attended a She Speaks conference, part of the Proverbs 31 Ministries. God used that conference to open my eyes, and this is what I saw…There was a revival starting across the country and God was raising these women up. God was calling them out and raising them up to lead. They were doing incredible things for Him! Large groups of women were coming out of churches. They were no different than we are, no better than we are. Not more talented- they have the same spiritual gifts, same God. But the one thing they all seemed to have in common was each other. They had each other! They had an established, organized Women’s Ministry to inspire each other, to encourage each other, and to instruct each other. To fan each other’s flame into a roaring fire, so they could be the women God intended them to be! To reach out to other women in their churches, their communities, and the world, by praying, teaching, speaking, writing, serving, and doing whatever God has called them to do, using their spiritual gifts to the fullest. I realized that God wanted to do that here-with us, too!
Friends, there is a revival beginning in this country! God’s Spirit is sweeping across our nation. Everywhere I go, people are talking about God renewing the hearts of His people, and breathing new life into our spirits. We know that in the last times, there will be a pouring out of evil in the world. The book of Revelation talks about the end times, and what our world will be like. It also talks about an out-pouring of His Spirit upon His people to strengthen and guide them through this time. We see evil increasing in our time, so we know that God’s Spirit is also being poured out at this time. Women, there is a “pouring-out” going on- and I want to be a part of it! What about you? I want to get soaked! Drenched! If God’s Spirit is being poured out on His people…if His Spirit is moving across our nation, I want to be a part of it! I don’t want to stand and watch! I don’t want to read about it…I want to be in the middle of it! I want to be on the front lines! How about you? I want to be in the middle of whatever God is doing!
So, I knew God wanted a ministry started…now what? I talked with Paul and Ruth, and then I just started praying and waited for God to move. A year later the first official meeting of Flame was held on September 18th…and we were on our way…together.
Now I want us to think about this a minute…Think about what this really means to you and me personally. What it means is that our God, the same God who made the universe, who set the stars in place- wants us! HE!… HE LOVES US and WANTS US! 1 John 3:1 says “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God.” He lavished His love on us! What a beautiful word! Lavished. He wants us to be closer, deeper in love with Him because He loves us so much! He wants us to know Him, and experience Him more than we ever have before. He has a purpose for our lives, you and me. We are loved by Him, and He has a calling on our lives, each one of us. He cared about us so much, He did not leave us where we were!
He wants a deeper relationship with us, and if we want that too, what do we do? We fan the Flame that is already inside us. How do we fan the Flame inside us to a roaring fire? So full of God, His Spirit, that we and everything around us are consumed by the fire? Just like any fire…we have to add fuel to our flame. By adding fuel, we “fan” it. We add fuel and fan it and it grows.
God is the Flame in our hearts. We can turn that Flame from a flickering ember to a roaring Flame by adding the fuel of time. We improve or grow any relationship by spending time with someone. If we love someone, we spend time with them…and our relationship with God is a love relationship. Spend time talking to Him, listening to Him, just being with Him. Enjoying spending time with Him. That’s what He wants…He wants you to want to be with Him!
Get into His Word. Think about this, God wrote you a letter, a love letter. Are we taking the time to read it, or are we too busy? Do we think- it’s really not that interesting to me? 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that the word of God is God- breathed. Think about what that means…it’s alive! When you read it- God’s Spirit goes into your spirit! If you want to come more alive spiritually…get in His Word!
If you don’t love God’s Word…pray for Him to give you a deep love for His Word. Hebrews 12:2 says that “Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith.” He can do in our lives, finish, or mature our faith in ways we cannot. Just ask Him for what you are lacking. That’s what I have to do, because I am lacking a lot! Need more faith? Ask Him. Need courage, or boldness? Ask! Whatever it is, just ask, He is more than willing and able.
That brings us to obedience. I’ve come to believe that obedience is key to an alive and growing relationship with God. Acts 13:22 records what God says about David… “I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I ask him to do.” David was known as a man after God’s own heart. If He has our heart, we will do what He asks of us. We will be obedient because we love Him so much! This is my area of greatest struggle…because I want to do what I want to do, when I want to do it…plain and simple. Obedience. The more we know Him (by spending time with Him, and in His Word), the more we trust Him. The more we trust Him, the more we obey Him. The more we obey Him, the more we know Him, and love Him, and trust Him, and obey Him! Wow, I’m getting dizzy! That’s how it all happens! He speaks to you all the time…are you listening? He speaks to you in the quiet times, or the not-so-quiet times, are you listening? He speaks to you through His Word, are you reading it? He speaks to us through people and circumstances…are you paying attention? And when you hear…do you obey?
Friends, think about that Flame inside of you. Is it a small flicker of a flame, an ember? Or is it a roaring fire, an all-consuming fire, burning you and everyone around you? Are you satisfied with where you are at spiritually, or do you want more? Do you want to experience more of God, more of His Presence in your life, more of His Spirit, His Flame in your life? I want more of Him! Is that you, too? Do you want to be a part of the outpouring of His Spirit that is happening? I do! I do! Is that you, too?
If God is speaking to you, then listen to His voice and obey. God never changes; He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. So…if we want to experience God in a different way…we are the ones that are going to have to do different things! We are the ones that have to change…He doesn’t!
If you are wanting more, ready for more…then I challenge you to to change! To do things differently. Spend more time with Him. Get into the Scriptures more often. Listen to what God is saying to you, and then do it. Be obedient, and take action! At the Flame meeting, a challenge was given to the women to stand together, as women of God, and say “Yes, I want more of God…I want to be more for Him!” I give the same challenge to you… let’s fan the Flame of God inside us until it is an all-consuming fire! Let’s fan the Flame in each other so that together we can set our world on fire!
